Marazion Dune Restoration

We are rejuvenating the dune system at Marazion, which boasts one of the most iconic locations in Cornwall – right opposite St. Michael’s Mount! Our approach aims to allow native plant species to reclaim and recolonise the dune system, increase its biodiversity, and reduce dune erosion by weather and foot traffic. The works we currently undertake will also make the habitat easier to maintain going forward.

Thanks to our hardy team of dune volunteers, we have already removed vast amounts of invasive vegetation species such as the non-native Rosa rugosa (aka Japanese Rose, Beach Rose or Sea Tomato) and native bramble thickets (Blackberry – Rubus fruticosus ).

We have now also made successive plantings of young Marram Grass (Ammophila arenaria), the familiar native dune species which helps stabilise the dunes.

Sections of the sand dunes have also been roped off since Spring 2025 to remove human foot traffic. This reduction in mechanical damage has already produced positive results – the existing Marram Grass has naturally extended its range, and a number of previously bare areas have now been naturally repopulated with new Marram plantlets, spreading by underground rhizomes from neighbouring parent plants.

The impacts of the changes we make to this vital habitat are also the subject of ongoing surveys being carried out.

We are working on the habitat restoration at Marazion Dunes under the guidance of Cornwall Wildlife Trust as part of its ‘Making Space for Sand’ Project. This is also in association with the landowner, St Aubyn Estates, to whom we are grateful for their permission and enthusiastic support.

New volunteers are always welcome! If you would like further information on how you can get involved, please contact us here or come along to our next Marine Conservation Group meeting held at The Lugger Inn at 6pm on the first Monday of each month. We’re a friendly bunch, so please come and join in!

WINTER TALKS
SEASON
2025/26

We have been running our current season of monthly WINTER TALKS since last October 2025, and have just put on the season finale on 16th March with “Close Encounters with Blue Sharks in Cornwall”.

These talks have been fascinating and thought-provoking, and the perfect antidote to some long, dark, stormy evenings!

If you’ve been part of any of our 2025/26 audience, then please know how much we’ve valued your support of these events. All of our speakers this season have been wowed by the size of audience they’ve been addressing…and the staff at our venue, The Lugger, told us that they look forward to our Winter Talks season because it brings such nice people into their pub and restaurant!

Here is this last season’s programme that you all help make happen! Looking forward to seeing you once again in the autumn!
