The Bumblebee Conservation Trust is a science-led, UK based charity established in 2006 because of serious concerns about the ‘plight of the bumblebee’.

Founded by Professor Dave Goulson, it is the only UK charity dedicated to conserving bumblebees. The Trust works across the UK inspiring everyone to help our precious wild bumblebees survive and thrive.

The Marine Strandings Network is a flagship project of Cornwall Wildlife Trust and has been recording and monitoring dead marine wildlife strandings in Cornwall and the Isles of Scilly for 20 years. We work in partnership with the Cetacean Strandings Investigation Progamme (DEFRA Funded) and University of Exeter to lead on marine strandings work for Cornwall.

Cornwall Council is exploring the potential of blue carbon in Cornwall’s coastal waters. Blue carbon is a term used to describe the carbon captured by the world’s oceans and coastal habitats and is a vital tool in stabilising climate change. Cornwall’s blue carbon ecosystems include seagrass, mud flats, salt marsh, maerl (an ancient coral reef) and kelp.

Blue Natural Capital Project

In January 2024, Cornwall Council completed their Blue Natural Capital Project.

The Project, funded by the Natural Environment Investment Readiness Fund (NEIRF) has expanded previously limited knowledge in Cornwall to provide a clearer understanding of blue carbon habitat extent and health, and created a baseline of evidence to inform options to unlock future private funding for natural capital in the county and beyond.

Since 2013, Project Seagrass has been committed conserving seagrass ecosystems to ensure that the benefits they provide people and planet are sustained now and for the future.

Seagrasses are flowering plants that live in the shallow, sheltered areas of our coast. These sensitive plants are different from seaweed and grow bright green leaves forming dense underwater meadows. These meadows are full of life, supporting thousands of marine species, producing oxygen, storing carbon, stabilising our coastlines, and keeping our ocean clean and clear. Yet, they are globally threatened and are facing significant loss around the world.

Congratulations to Katie Maggs,

Chair of the Mounts Bay Marine Group

on her BBC Radio Cornwall’s Green Award!

We at MBMG would like to congratulate Katie Maggs, Chair of the group and marine conservationist for winning the BBC Radio Cornwall’s Make a Difference award in the Green category for her marine campaigning, conservation and education work. The BBC gives the Green award to ‘an individual or group of people who help to make where we live more environmentally friendly and better for nature’. As well as chairing the MBMG, Katie is Cornwall BSAC snorkel instructor and registered snorkel centre, an expert speaker and presenter, a marine mammal medic rescuer with the British Divers Marine Life Rescue (BDMLR) and also offers snorkelling safaris as part of the NHS social prescribing programme.  Judge Petroc Trelawny @PetrocTrelawny said he was really impressed to hear about Katie’s work leading the citizen science projects of the Marine Group @MountsBayMarine and  her social prescribing – offering snorkel experiences for all ages and abilities – for the NHS and for Age UK.

As BBC Cornwall noted: ‘Katie Maggs inspires thousands of children and adults with her passion for Cornwall’s stunning marine life’.  In her radio interview, Katie acknowledged the rest of the worthy nominees. She explained that ‘a lot of people don’t know all the magic that lies under the surface of the sea. I just love seeing kids learning. It brings them closer to nature’.  Katie seeks to inspire people to discover coastal wildlife and rockpool habitats, especially in Mount’s Bay. She said: “I think it’s really important to share the beauty that we’ve got out in Mount’s Bay”. Katie also features in an upcoming conservation film on sea conservation entitled ‘Green Ocean Gold’ coming out this Autumn and directed by Olaf Lawrence and Produced by Charlie Reaves.
